Born and raised in NYC, Charles earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1985 before continuing his academic training at the Art Students League under several eminent artists.
Before opening his own studio Charles spent several years creating theatrical scenery for the Broadway stage via Production Resource Group in New Windsor, NY. He currently lives and works in northern New Jersey.

I love painting portraits. I love the whole history of the form, from the stone age through today. It is a unique art form which makes an intimate connection first between an artist and another individual, but also with any future observer. By this route portraits can speak to us of a living soul across time, even transcending cultures in a personal and powerful way.
Posthumous portraits can be extra special because of the comfort they bring to the survivors.
I try to find out as much as I can about their lives and personalities, and to see as many photographs as possible in all kinds of circumstances and moods until a picture in my mind begins to emerge.
To their loved ones a well-executed image can help create peaceful moments, precious memories or welcome reminders of those they’ve lost who, through the artist’s hand, can live on in real time in a way that a snapshot can rarely equal.
